Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about cane toad management and pet protection.

"Toads are gone, pets live on."

Pet Safety & Emergency Response

How quickly do cane toad toxins affect pets?

Effects can begin within minutes — often 5–15 minutes after contact. Every minute counts, which is why immediate action is critical.

What should I do if my pet comes into contact with a cane toad?

Contact your nearest Emergency Vet immediately. We are a prevention service, not an emergency service.

While getting to the vet:

  1. Remove your pet from the area
  2. Wipe their gums and tongue with a damp cloth to remove toxin (do not use running water directly in the mouth)
  3. Call your vet straight away and transport your pet as soon as possible
  4. Keep them calm, quiet, and cool on the way

How do I know if poisoning is serious?

Mild signs: Drooling, pawing at the mouth, red gums.

Severe signs: Vomiting, staggering, seizures, collapse.

Any contact should be treated as an emergency — don't wait to "see if they get better."

What should I NOT do if my pet is poisoned?

  • Don't hose water directly into the mouth (can cause aspiration)
  • Don't give milk, food, or human medications
  • Don't wait — always seek vet treatment immediately

Are cane toads poisonous to dogs in Australia?

Yes. Cane toads secrete a toxin from the glands behind their head that is extremely dangerous to dogs and cats. Exposure can cause drooling, seizures, collapse, and even death within minutes.

Can a single lick from a toad kill my pet?

Even a small amount of toxin can cause severe illness or death, especially in small pets. Always treat exposure as an emergency.

Toad Inspection & Removal

What happens during a toad inspection?

We visit before dark, survey danger zones (we call these red zones), inspect for breeding sites, and collect any toads found after nightfall. You'll receive a safety report with tips.

Do I have to handle or kill the toads?

Not at all. We humanely euthanise them following RSPCA guidelines. This is a completely hands-off service for you.

How do you humanely euthanise cane toads?

We follow the RSPCA-approved fridge-to-freezer method. Toads are first placed in a refrigerator for several hours, which gradually lowers their body temperature and puts them into a state of torpor (deep sleep). Once they are fully sedated and unresponsive, they are then transferred to a freezer where they peacefully pass away without experiencing any pain or distress. This two-step cooling method is considered the most humane approach by animal welfare organisations in Australia.

Can't I do this myself?

You can, but many customers find it unpleasant and risky. DIY often leads to toxin exposure, injuries, or illegal relocation. We make it safe and easy.

Will toads just come back?

The same ones won't — we remove them permanently. However, others may move in, which is why recurring collection or barrier fencing is best for long-term protection.

When are cane toads most active?

Cane toads are nocturnal and most active during warm, wet months — typically November through March. They may still appear year-round after rain or in humid conditions.

How big do cane toads get in Queensland?

Adult toads are usually 9–15 cm but can grow beyond 20 cm. They have dry, bumpy skin, bony ridges above the eyes, and large poison glands behind the head.

How do I tell a cane toad from a native frog?

Cane toads have:

  • Dry, rough skin
  • Large poison glands behind the head
  • Bony ridges above the eyes
  • A waddling walk (frogs hop)

Native frogs generally have smooth, moist skin and lack the big poison glands. When in doubt — don't touch, and call us for help.

How do I remove cane toads from my yard?

The safest and most effective way to remove cane toads from your yard is through professional removal services. Our experts conduct thorough inspections of your property, identify all hiding spots including gardens, under decks, and around pools, and remove toads humanely while protecting your pets. We service Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and Northern NSW.

How do I remove cane toads from my swimming pool?

Cane toads are attracted to swimming pools as water sources. Our specialists safely remove cane toads from pools using techniques that protect your pool equipment and water quality. We also provide advice on making your pool area less attractive to toads.

Prevention & Myths

What attracts cane toads to my yard?

Outdoor lights (which draw insects), water bowls, pet food, and standing water are the main attractants.

What is the best cane toad deterrent?

The most reliable deterrent is a professionally installed PetSafe Barrier combined with regular inspections. Removing water sources, food bowls, and outdoor lights will also make your yard less attractive to toads.

Do mothballs, salt, or chemicals work to keep cane toads away?

No — these methods don't work and may be dangerous to pets or the environment. Safe fencing and regular inspections are the only proven solutions.

How to get rid of cane toads permanently?

To get rid of cane toads permanently, we recommend combining professional removal with our PetSafe Barrier fencing. While regular inspections and removal services eliminate existing toads from your property, barrier fencing prevents new ones from entering your yard — giving you long-term protection for your pets.

Can I get rid of cane toads myself or should I hire professionals?

While you can attempt DIY removal, professional services are safer and more effective. Handling toads risks toxin exposure to you and your pets, you may miss breeding sites and hiding spots, and many DIY methods are ineffective or illegal. Our trained experts know how to remove cane toads thoroughly and humanely.

PetSafe Barrier Fencing

What is the PetSafe Barrier?

The PetSafe Barrier is a specially designed system that prevents cane toads from entering a designated safe zone. The barrier is installed around your backyard or pet area, buried into the ground, and angled outward to prevent toads climbing over or digging under. It provides 24/7 protection without any ongoing effort from you.

What materials do you use?

We use purpose-designed Textilene mesh that is durable, weather-resistant, and safe for pets.

How deep is the fence installed?

Our toad- and wildlife-proof fencing is buried at least 150 mm below ground to stop toads from digging underneath.

I have gates. How does that work?

We attach a piece of edging that brushes the ground, ensuring a tight seal but allowing the same gate movement and access you had before installation.

Won't the lawn mower damage the barrier?

No — the Textilene mesh is nearly indestructible. We also offer protective edging with screws and washers for added protection.

What colours does the barrier come in?

Our barrier comes in black, brown, white and green. They are all see-through, with matching mouldings!

Does the fencing actually work?

Yes — 99% effective. It's been tested for 10+ years. We also offer regular fence checks to ensure ongoing protection.

Will it ruin the look of my yard?

The mesh is low-visibility, breathable, and colour-matched to your fence. Most people don't even notice it's there.

What if I'm renting?

We offer portable fenced pet zones that you can take with you when you move.
